What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state that we often slip into during our daily lives…..have you ever driven to a destination and then can’t recall certain parts of the journey?  Or have you read a book or watched a movie and became totally engrossed in it?  This a natural hypnotic trance.

Hypnosis is a normal state of mind that allows access to the subconscious mind to promote desired changes. Used professionally, hypnosis can reduce stress, control pain, conquer fears and alter habits such as smoking and weight loss.

Hypnosis is always self induced.  The hypnotherapist is merely the guide that facilitates the hypnotic process.  It is like a guided meditation that allows the client to relax the body and the mind and prepare for the positive changes to take place.  Imagery is widely used as it is the language of the subconscious mind.

Hypnosis is not sleep, being unconscious or being controlled by someone else.  Changes will never happen unless the client wants it to happen.

How does Hypnosis work?

The hypnotist guides the client in a relaxed state which is called an ‘induction’.   Total relaxation is completed with a deepening technique that can take various forms (i.e. imagining going down stairs, an elevator, escalator, etc).  Imaging can then be used to establish a ‘safe place’ or to direct your subconscious to access areas for changes to occur.

Your conscious mind is the critical filter which filters or edits processed information that travels from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind.  Under hypnosis you allow the conscious mind to be bypassed.  As the subconscious mind holds all of our memories and perceptions, the work happens here.  It is important to note that the client is in control at all times and will never disclose ‘secrets’ or do anything against their will.
